Forever Loved and Never Forgotten

Here on these pages, we want to lay tribute to those lost special equine beings, as a way of thanking them for gracing our lives with their dedication, loyalty and compassion.  Each one has given valuable friendship, support, love and knowledge to help us on our way.  Please come share in the Tributes of those that have passed from this world, but never from the hearts of those that still love and appreciate their contributions.

Castle Monterey - 1982 to 2008 Print E-mail

finale-monterey-mar5-200w.jpg

Castle has passed away on December 8th and we will miss her.

Castle Monterey brings to this century the blood of California’s first ranch Morgans, brought here from Texas in the early 1920’s. Over and over again her pedigree traces back to Sellman’s stock. She is pure Western Working Family and pure Old California. Her pedigree is a Who’s Who of the great early California Morgans and their breeders. Behind her are many Baroque Morgans with working ability and many quality breeding horses.

Caduceus Denver - 1983 to 2007 Print E-mail
denver-1.jpg (73183 bytes)

Denver, with his strong Brunk and Western Working Family pedigree, is a source of height, excellent movement, good looks and good minds. Behind him are the three branches of Brunk greatness—Jubilee King, Flyhawk and Senator Graham. Jubilee King comes through such good ones as Agazziz, Mickey Finn, Ken Carmen, and more. Plus there are crosses to Jubilee King’s sister, Sentola. Flyhawk comes down through various good breeding stock too. There is also the Western Working Family from Romanesque and various Linsley descendants. The bottom mare line goes to early Montana breeding. Throughout this pedigree there was careful breeding for good working horses with good minds. Many of his ancestors were strong breeding horses, some founding their own families. This is a strong horse with a strong pedigree bringing the wonderful old Morgans to today.

Denver is a prepotent stallion. His babies are large with easy going nature and exceptional good looks. Black is the most common color, but he has thrown grey, bay and chestnut as well.  Denver's stud fee is $950.00, live foal guarantee, $200.00 non-refundable booking fee included. Denver stands to selected mares live cover at Flower Farm Sport Horses. We also offer AI on the premises for mares not eligible for live cover. WoodRose Katrina 9-17-82 to 11-6-06 Print E-mail

woodrose-katrinaThe grand old mare Woodrose Katrina comes from a pedigree of working horses, mostly bred in California. Behind her are such as Dapper Dan, Gay Mac, Antman, Sun Down Morgan, Redman, Mountcrest Sellman, Lippitt Morman, and many good Sellman bred mares who are the foundation of the Western Working Family in California. Breeders of her ancestors are those who helped to form the California branch of the WWF and who knew good working horses and had strict requirements as to what worked on the ranches and what was acceptable in a horse. Katrina was nearly lost to the breed, having few registered produce and those going to people not interested in breeding or their heritage, but wanting really good sound using horses. It is indeed fortunate that she was found and brought back into the Morgan world to leave offspring for breeders of today and for the future.

Funquest Swallow - 1982 to 2006 Print E-mail
Funquest Swallow Morgan horse breeding program. Funquest Swallow is one of the last pure Funquest horses. Her marvelous heritage is of the Kansas plains working Morgans. Behind Funquest Swallow are excellent Brunk bred horses who went to the ranchers of the west. Funquest Swallows heritage are Morgans from Kansas and Oklahoma ranchers and Morgans going back to Elmer Brown and Richard Sellman, the cornerstones of the Working Western Family. All the horses in the third line of her pedigree were foaled in 1926 through 1948; this brings that solid old blood up to today very quickly, along with the heritage of those times for Morgans of working ability, sense, and good temperament.

Montezsierradon - 1980 to 2006 Print E-mail

RETIRED

Morgan horse stallion at stud, Montezierradon

This aged stallion is one that breeders should not ignore as he brings down such valuable blood to today; blood that is rare and hard to come by. He brings two close crosses to the good Easter Vermont blood, being the product of a grandson being bred to a daughter of that horse. This is the classic inbreeding that works. Easter Vermont was by the great Red Vermont by Jubilee King. What part of this pedigree that is not Brunk is Western Working Family, most of that going back to Richard Sellman’s breeding, and one line back to old Montana breeding including the Baroque stallion Chief Buglar who had so much old Daniel Lambert behind him. This is proven breeding that produces correct, Baroque style, handsome, good minded, good moving Morgans made in the mode of the ancient ones.

Montezsierradon is 26 years old and just retired. He will be spending his retirement years with Sandra Moats - the original owner who always regretted selling him in the first place.  In fact, Sandra is writing a book with the last chapter devoted to how 'Donny' came back to her.  OGO has been honored to care for him in the short time he has been with us.  We will miss you 'Donny'.

Nova 1986 - 4/12/2005
by owner, Laura

Last night we had to put Nova, my dog, down.  She has been my Miracle Dog-living way beyond, what a dog of her size should be able to do (she weighed about 80 lbs). She has survived 3 cancer surgeries.  She has graced my life and blessed me.

Oh, she had lost a lot and had restricted movement, but she was my Walking Dog--taking a walk every morning as I fed the horses & another walk at the dinner feeding. Sometimes she would walk during the day too. She loved her food and demanded her treats.

GERONIMO - 'Mitch's Geronimo'
March 25, 1986 - April 13, 2005
by owner, Ildy ven De Putte

Geronimo!  He bore a famous warrior's name, and his beauty and mind to please were truly fit for a king.

But to me, he was 'Gerimo'...my big, affectionate, baby horse who refused to grow up into the harsh realities of adulthood.  With his 19 years he was still the most foal-like and playful horse I had ever encountered.  He loved to love and be loved-whether it be other horses, or people...

South River Kohla - 1985 to 2005 Print E-mail
South River Kohla Breeding Morgan mare. Kohla is a raven black 15.2 hand Wyoming Flyhawk daughter. She is an imposing figure with exceptional bone as well as a substantial hindquarter. Her movement is the big flat fluid movement that her lines are famous for and she is appropriately performance proven in dressage. She is one of the quietest, sweetest mares. Her dam's lines feature Congo and Chingadero on the pedigree.

South River Kohla's pedigree is mostly Brunk with a bit of Government, old Midwest family and some Old Vermont. On her sire side, the horses were bred by western ranchers and so some Western Working Family also appears.  The same Brunk horses appear over and over behind her, giving their closely bred strength to her pedigree and breeding ability.

Bob & Carol Simpson
of Prima Kosta Rancho

Morgan horse stallion at stud, Primavera Valdez
This handsome, correct, good-minded stallion is well known by many. His numerous get are made in his image and his strongly close bred pedigree helps to bring the old California working Morgan heritage to today. His sire is a double grandson of Ro Mac, that good son of Gay Mac, and Gay Mac is to be found twice more in the pedigree. The dam line of Valdez’s paternal grandsire has some good old Brunk breeding and there is also some old Brunk behind the sire of Valdez’s dam. The mare lines predominately go to Richard Sellman and there is also Sellman’s breeding on a sire line going back to the good Sun Down Morgan. His pedigree and heritage is that of pure Western Working Family with many prolific breeding horses behind him. His entire pedigree is one of breeding strength.

Primavera Valdez passed away in 2005.   We invite you to read the Special Tribute article about this amazing stallion.

Noble Lady and Her Circle of Life
Noble Lady 1971 - 2001
by owner, Nancy King

Her number was 023630 and she was born March 24, 1971and died on Feb 23, 2001.  She was bred by William Montgomery of Elk Grove, CA, who was a brother in law of Hazel Sweden, one of the founders of the Sacramento Valley Morgan Horse Club and the show at Plymouth, CA.  It was known as the Mother Lode All Morgan Horse Show for years.  William and his wife leased some mares from the Circle H ranch at Bridgeport, CA, and bred them to some California stallions.  Noble Lady was sold as a two year old to a couple in the Carson City area of Nevada who also raised Arabians.  They bred her to their Arabian stallion and she had her first black filly for them.  Sadly a divorce forced her to go through a sale and only by a stroke of luck did she end up in my area just long enough for me to hear about her and buy her....

Bay Lady, also known as “Bright Eyes,” came into my life in the summer of 1980. I had become interested in the Lippitt Miss Nekomia horses for their beauty and their personality. Bay Lady, with two crosses to Miss Nekomia, was a true Nekomia horse and brought joy to my life for nearly 20 years. She was my first Morgan.

(Ember Medallion x Rosemont Gay Bess)
March 16, 1976 to October 24, 2000

It is difficult to know where to start, so perhaps the beginning would be best. Dave and I were looking for our first Morgan and found a breeder not too far from us. After visiting Ember Morgans, we had decided on a 10-year-old mare and were finalizing the sale when Bill George told us we really should have “that big filly in the back.” Dave went back to look at her better and after nearly an hour I went to look for Dave. He had gone back there, looked into her huge eyes, fallen in and never did come out. Serene and he were bonded in an instant and that lasted for all time.

Reed's Fancy Lady 1986 - 2000
by owners, Laura Algranti & Nancy Nard

In July 2000, at age 14, Fancy Lady passed away suddenly and shockingly from acute, rapid onset enteritis, reminding us how truly fragile these horses are and that we should never take for granted the blessing of their presence in our lives.

Fancy was born in 1986, at the Colorado farm of Everett Reed. Her sire, Reed’s Gallant Star, was sired by Gallant King (Flyhawk x Jubilee King daughter). Gallant Star was out of Cornwallis Pat, whose own outrageously beautiful head was inherited by Fancy. Fancy’s dam was Yola, a double granddaughter of Cornwallis. We first saw Fancy in October 1988, while visiting Mr. Reed to meet Gallant King. We were impressed with Gallant King and his son Gallant Star as well as the mare Yola. Fancy was a well-matured 2-year-old and truly named—she was indeed fancy.
